Berries, Berries, Berries

Enjoy summer’s bounty with berry picking. Wander through our fields, where the air is filled with the sweet and refreshing fragrance of ripe berries.

To make the most out of your berry picking, here are some helpful tips to remember

Berry-ly Ripe

Be sure to pick only ripe berries from the plant. For raspberries, look for ones that are soft yet firm with a deep red color. They should easily come off the plant with a slight tug and you might need to look between the stems for any hidden berries that are ripe enough to be picked. Avoid any raspberries that are light red or have white tips – they’re not quite ready. As for our blackberries, they are thorn free which makes picking them very easy! Like raspberries, blackberries are ready to be picked when they are a shiny, deep black color with a soft but firm feel. They’ll also come off the plant with a slight tug if they are ready to be picked. For the juiciest flavor, only pick the berries that are a full deep purple, almost black.

Pick Like A Pro

To help stabilize the plant for an easy pick, we advise you to hold the stem with one hand and pick the berry with your free hand. This technique helps the plant from shaking, which can disturb other berries, but also allows you to pluck the fruit efficiently and cleanly. The raspberry bushes are a bit prickly, so wearing lightweight gloves is optional for those that choose to wear them.

Be Berry Careful

After you pick your perfectly ripe berries, place them gently in your container and be careful not to overpack it to prevent any berries getting squished. When you arrive home with your bounty, store them in a cool place, like a refrigerator, until you’re ready to eat them. It’s best if you place the berries in a paper bag so they don’t dry out. Only wash the berries when you’re ready to eat them. We recommend eating them one or two days after bringing them home. This will ensure the ultimate freshness of nature’s candies.

Snap To It

Hellerick’s Family Farm also offers sugar snap peas for picking. These will be available to pluck every day the farm is open while in season. To pick these, you might have to roll the plant over to expose the bottom. There you can pull them off with a quick snap and bring them home to enjoy as a healthy snack or in a fresh summer salad.

U-Pick Flowers in PA

Now that you’ve collected the food, you’re going to need flowers to enjoy while you eat. About 100 years ago, our grandparents planted around 300 peonies, and now you can pick from a wide array of pink, white, blush, and burgundy blooms to take home. During the summer, the farm transforms into a vibrant canvas of colors. With acres full of various flower varieties, you can pick as many flowers as your container can hold.

Wander through acres full of:

  • Cornflowers
  • Larkspur
  • Peonies
  • Bachelor Buttons
  • Zinnias
  • Cosmos
  • American Legion – Red Poppies

We also happily provide cutting tools for when you are ready to prepare the colorful flowers for your journey home.

Sunflower Days

Mark your calendar for our annual Sunflower Days from August to late October. End the summer season with 5 acres of sunflowers in 25 different colors, shapes, and sizes. We plant these beauties every two weeks to ensure they bloom just in time for a summer bouquet or a picture-perfect day. Whether you’re a nature lover, a photographer, or someone decorating their home, our Bucks County sunflower fields will brighten everyone’s day.
